‘Nikkei Matsuri: the Heart of Nikkei,’ which reproduces Japanese summer festival, is going to be held at Nikkei National Museum & Cultural Centre (6688 Southoaks Crescent) in Burnaby on August 31st and September 1st. Nikkei Place Foundation host the festival.

The National Museum and the Cultural Centre has held several Japanese events so far, but it is the first time this year to hold Japanese summer festival by opening entire building to the public. The Centre is ‘the place to share joys, help each other, and deepen the bond.’ They want more Japanese Canadians, Japanese newcomers, and Canadians to let the Centre know and both children and adults to experience Japanese summer festival even in Canada.

During the festival, various kinds of participatory activities will be provided at the Centre: Shateki (Prize Shooter), Yo-yo Tsuri (Yo-yo Balloon Fishing)- must-have Japanese summer festival games at Kids Zone Games, ‘Nikkei’s Got Talent’ ? first Nikkei Centre idol, beer garden, and Bon Odori. Katsura Sunshine, who was born in Toronto, ‘works successfully’ for Japanese TV and ‘finally come back to Canada’. His performance of English rakugo (comic storytelling) attracts attention.

There is no subsidy provided by the government, but Nikkei Centre is managed with donation by people who support Nikkei Community. A lot of people and companies also support the event by donating a lantern. The lanterns will be displayed on the lobby of the Center as the ‘Lantern Wall’ with 8 meters wide x 4 meters high. They ask for cooperation of opening cultural events in the future.

Nikkei Matsuri open from 11:00 to 24:00 on August 31st, from 11:00 to 22:00 on September 1st. Admission free. A Ticket book (20 pieces of ticket book = CAD 20) is required when participating in the games and buying food at Food Booths. Free shuttle bus from Edmonds Skytrain station is available every 20 minutes.
