‘The Charles Bar’ in Gastown - ‘Green Beer’ Comes up on St. Patrick's Day

Green beer comes up at ‘The Charles Bar’ (136 W. Cordova St., Tel: 604-568-8040) on St. Patrick’s Day. The bar is at Woodwards building site in Gastown, which was renovated last September and now renewed. On St. Patrick’s Day or on the weekends before the Eve, parades and parties are held on and the town is filled with people in green clothes.

The bar is spacious, about 2,200 square feet, 137 seating and 50 seating for patio. A big television (2 meters × 3 meters) is set up at the one side of middle counter. Hockey and football can be shown. Live performance by DJ is also held on the weekends. Brooke from The Adelphia Group Inc., who manages this bar, six liquor stores and night club in Vancouver, says, ‘This is a hybrid bar, combining all the elements into one like a pub, restaurant, sports bar, and pub style lounge.’

This bar opens in the daytime. The basic concept is ‘fair price and friendly staff.’ ‘Pub menu such as pizza, sandwiches, and burgers with a little twist are served.’ (by General Manager Chris Hannan) He also says, ‘(This bar location) has a history. This area is developing and upcoming. It connects to downtown as social hub. People can enjoy the bar casually whether they are small or large group.’

They serve Green Beer pitcher (Heineken beer colored with green) = CAD 14.99 (regular price = CAD 20) and Irish whiskey = CAD 4.15 on St. Patrick’s Day.

 Opening hours: 11:00 a.m. ~ 1:00 a.m. (until 2:00 a.m. on Friday and Saturday) Lunch time: Monday ~ Thursday = 11:00 ~ 13:00, Friday and Saturday = 11:00 ~ 14:00, and Sunday = 10:00 ~ 14:00.
